INTRODUCTION
For a long time, Hanoi has gradually become a multi-national and culturally diverse city. Immigrants and natives exist side by side, painting an interesting unified scene of the contradictions of old and new, traditional and modern, and native and foreign life. The “Gem Island” Ngũ Xã in recent years has developed as a typical example of the above phenomenon. From 2022, this area has been transformed into a walking district – a night food area, with an outdoor stage that regularly hosts public shows, and a sparkling decorative lighting system. Hidden gems and hole-in-the-wall establishments are a common feature of the Gem Island area. In and around this area, Vietnamese and foreigners live together amongst restaurants, bars, shops, and cultural hubs, creating a bustling island that isn’t too crowded.

With the guidance of Huong Mi Le, you will visit contemporary art exhibitions at Manzi Art Space and Hanoi Studio Gallery; learn about local temples and pagodas such as Chau Long Pagoda, Than Quang Pagoda, Ngu Xa communal house; explore new cultural experience spaces such as Làng Gà Trống, Line 6 – vintage electric tram carriages, learn about the bronze casting craft that once existed in Ngũ Xã; meet the business owners who are building the new face of this area; and more.

On this walk together, you will be guided in activities to explore and record your experiences using the tools of visual arts – to co-create a final unique piece of this journey.
