CONTENT

Workshop-tour “Hanoi Open No. 07: Architectural Layers” will enable you to explore the layers of culture, history, art, and architecture of Hoan Kiem area, with the guidance and sharing of Architect Nguyen Cong Hiep. Walking together through the streets of Ly Thai To – Trang Tien – Le Thanh Tong – Ham Long – Tran Hung Dao – Hang Bai – Trang Thi – Hai Ba Trung – Ly Thuong Kiet, participants will learn about the history as well as the unique features of Hanoi’s long-standing, restored, recent and contemporary architectural works from Con Coc Garden, National History Museum, Hanoi University of Pharmacy , St. Anthony’s Church, often called Ham Long Church, the Supreme People’s Court to the Hanoi Police Museum, Ho Guom Theater… On this tour together, you will be guided in activities to explore and record your experiences using the tools of visual arts – to co-create a final unique piece of this journey, as well as have an insight  of stylistic diversity, spatial transformation as well as continuity and interference between ancient and modern, east and west, preservation and development of central Hanoi’s architecture and culture.

ABOUT THE HOST

Architect Nguyen Cong Hiep was born in 1986 in Hanoi. He is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Architectural History – Faculty of Architecture – Hanoi Architectural University, where he studied and graduated in Civil Architecture. CA’ Library – Collective Art & Architecture (formerly known as Library 303 – also known as CA’ Library) that he founded has become one of the first open architectural community libraries in Vietnam, an important center for research, learning and community exchange in the region with more than 5,000 books and magazines on architecture, art and design.

“Hanoi Open No.7:  Architectural interlayers” is part of the second workshop series of “Hanoi Open” taking place in March – July 2024, collaborating with artist Ly Nguyễn and architect Nguyễn Công Hiệp, with the support of DAFA, MYAN Poetry & Art, Textile Linker, TPD, and Heart Zouk Dance. The series contains 03 workshop-tours, review – discussion – co-creation.

The workshop-tours include:

  • “Hanoi Open 05: Hữu Hồng – Free movements” (24/03/24), guided by MYAN and Le Nguyen Duy Phuong, takes place in the area of Ngũ Hiệp – Duyên Hà – Yên Sở.

  • “Hanoi Open 06: Đảo Ngọc – Catching the life beats” (25/05/24), guided by Hương Mi Lê, exploring the area Phan Huy Ích – Châu Long – Ngũ Xã.

  • “Hanoi Open 07: Hoàn Kiếm – Architectural interlayers” (28/07/24), guided by Nguyễn Công Hiệp, going through streets of Lý Thái Tổ – Hàm Long – Lý Thường Kiệt.
